Rochelle School is no longer a school; it’s an artists’ enclave in the heart of achingly hip Shoreditch. But when it was still a place of learning, the space that is now occupied by Rochelle Canteen served as the bike shed. That was until Margot Henderson and Melanie Arnold moved in to set up a kitchen for their successful catering company Arnold & Henderson.
As they served lunches to the appreciative artists, word spread and the public made a beeline to get a taste of their no-nonsense meals – a selection of daily updated dishes that take the best of British ingredients and plate them up in generous portions.
Open daily for breakfast, lunch and tea (there’s no dinner service), this is a canteen in more than just name. It’s a far cry from Margot’s past life working alongside her husband Fergus Henderson at the French House Dining Room, before he left to set up St. John. The gleaming white walls, vaulted ceiling and wipe-clean tables – devoid of linen or fussy place settings – definitely make the interior more café than restaurant looks wise, but then that was always the idea: ornate place settings, mood lighting and music are set aside for the catering branch of the business.
Rochelle Canteen is tucked away to such an extent that passersby are often blissfully unaware of the culinary magic that takes place behind the unmarked entrance. But once discovered, you’ll have the lunch of your life with the likes of brill, grilled lamb, beef cheeks and seasonal vegetables making regular appearances on the menu. However, if you want to toast your good fortune at finding this gem with a glass of wine, you’ll need to bring your own and pay a small corkage: Rochelle Canteen is all about the food.
